THE HISTORY OF THIRD MOUNT ZION BAPTIST CHURCH (TMZBC)

“upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18

  • In 1881, a small group of men and women, formerly of St. John Baptist Church, were led by the spirit to erect their own place of worship. A brush arbor served as the first site utilized for worship.  The group later organized as a church and decided upon the name of Third Mount Zion Baptist Church.
  • The Rev. Nelson Allen briefly served as the first pastor of TMZBC.
  • The Rev. Nelson Vaughan Young succeeded him. During this period, the bush arbor was replaced with a small building.  This building was destroyed by fire.
  • In 1918, The Rev. L.M. Johnson was called to pastor TMZBC. He faithfully served as the pastor for 35 years.  Under his leadership and guidance, a new building was constructed.
  • In 1965, the Rev. Alfred Jones, Jr. was called to pastor this church. Under his pastoral direction, in 1973, the church was remodeled with the installation of bricks and pews.
  • In 1976, the Rev. John Ferguson became the pastor. It was during this time that a major goal was accomplished – the burning of the mortgage.
  • In March of 1989, Dr. Samuel Gilbert, II was called to pastor this church. Under his direction, many restorations and renovations continued in the up keeping of God’s house.
  • In 1995 The Rev. Kenneth Hicks became the pastor.  Under his leadership, the church’s music ministry grew.
  • In 1997, The Holy Spirit directed our path in the calling of our current pastor, the Rev. Antonio M. Baker, Sr., a man who knows no greater joy than to study the scriptures, prepare the message that God impresses upon him and to preach in the power of the Holy Spirit. He truly exemplifies the commitment, character, and conduct of a man of God.  Under Rev. Baker’s pastorate, our church, has grown spiritually, physically, and financially. God ordained this Pastor and people to make His vision of building a new house of worship a reality. In July 2011, the “City of Zion” was constructed at its new location, 9132 Fredericksburg Turnpike on 11.62 acres of land.  The building of this new church is a sign of what God is doing in each of our lives. We are on the verge of a great renewal, revival, and breakthrough. Knitted and joined together, standing fast in one spirit, we continue to boldly stand on the promises of God. We give all the Glory to God for the great things He has done at TMZBC.
